Research
The hybrid car battery design was the third and most challenging project we had. The goal for the project was to make a car go 5 meters, and the enegy source had to be renuable. My group researched diffrerent alternative energy sources that we could use to make our car go 5 meters. Our group seckteched different options for usuing pneumatic, elastic, and spring energy. We then weighted out the "pros" and "cons" of each car and made a generally hypothosis for what each car would do. With information that we collected online and through our hypothosises we decided it would be best to build a rubber band car. We concluded that elastic energy was the easyiest to set up, most powerfully, and most compatible with our time constraints.
Development
After researching and drawing our plans we had 3 designs, they consisted of pneumatic, elastic, and spring energy. Our first prototype that we made used rubber bands that wrapped around an axle and when released the car would move forward. The only problem with that design was that it didnt move due to the overly large wheels we used and the heavy chassis. Our second design used compressed air from a balloon to push the car forward. The only down fall of this design was that it wasnt consistant and did not move the car very far. After failling twice we moved on to our final design. This last design was a combiation of everything that we had learned from the previous designs. It consisted of rubber band powering the rear axle, a light chassis, and smaller wheels. On the final race day our car went 4 out of the 5 meters and was one of the fastiest cars in the class.
Main Concepts
mass- Our group struggled with making a light frame for our car, but the cars final mass was 84g.
velocity- Our car was one of the fastiest cars in the class covering 1m in .36 seconds.
friction- This is one of the biggest issues in designing a car because affects many areas of a cars design. For my group, the area that was most affected by friction was the axles and bearings rubbing against each other.
Reflection
Overall i felt that our team did well as a group, but there are some things that I did well on,and things I could improve on. I feel that I gained new skills such as affective problem solving and adapting to team members steghths and weaknesses. Throughout the project our team struggled with failure and team member copperation wich slowed our team down. Our team recognized those weaknesses and solved them by making sure every one was included in the building process. However I still felt that there are areas that I acceled and areas that I need some help with. I feel that I resolved team issues well and copperated with team mates in times of stuggle. In addition I feel that I could have included team members more often in building and planned our work days so that they were more affective.
